Kotor

Kotor, MontenegroKotor is a small town, clutched between the Kotor Bay and mountain-mass Lovcen. In 1979 Kotor was placed in the List of World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. It is may be the only medieval town in Adriatic region that remains in such a good condition with the city structure typical for the XII-XIV.

The Old town is a unique architectural ensemble that had being formed from different styles in a very limited space during the period from the end of XII till the beginning of XX. A massive fortification system, based on the wall of 15 m high and 20 m wide emphasizes the delicate beauty of the town. Fortifications not only surround the Old city, but rise to the mountains up to the Fortress of St. John. The length of the walls is 4.5 km.

One of the main sights of Kotor is the St. Triphon’s Cathedral (1166) - striking example of the Romanian architecture in Adriatic region. In the Cathedral you can find the remains of the frescos of the XIV century and a sacristy with gorgeous ornamentation of the Kotor and Venetian jewellers.

Beside the Cathedral there are several interesting pieces of the sacred architecture of different styles (XII-XX) as well as the palaces of the rich families (XV- XVII): Drago, Bizanty, Pima, Grgurin. In the last palace now the Maritime Museum with it’s interesting collection is located. The Clock Tower (XVI) and the opposite the medieval pillory still remains adorn the central square.
