Niksic is the second largest city in Montenegro, industrial center. The modern city image was assumed at the end of XIX, when a city plan was elaborated by architect Josip Slade. Duke's Palace was built by him in 1900 in the Renaissance style (today a museum is located here). We also recommend to pay attention to an orthodox Cathedral located on the hill above the city, as well as to an old city fortress having area of 1.5 hectares (is being reconstructed).
There is an artificial lake Krupac to the north-west of the city. Clear water, plenty of fish, a nicely equipped beach, a lake promenade, wide field on the one side of the lake and picturesque mountains on the other side, attract thousands of visitors in summer. Soon, few more small beaches; football and basketball fields, tennis courts, as well as golf courses will be arranged on the lakeside.
There is a small ski center Vucje 17 km from Niksic, near the canyon of the river Komarnica. Gentle and not long slopes are suitable for beginning skiers. In Vucje, there are four trails 2750 m long equipped with three bar ski-lifts.
